Somnath

Somnath temple

Somnath is a historic and revered pilgrimage town located in the Gir Somnath district of Gujarat, India. Situated on the western coast by the Arabian Sea, it is most famous for the Somnath Temple, one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva.

History and Significance: The site of Somnath has been a place of pilgrimage since ancient times, as it is a "Triveni Sangam," the confluence of three rivers: Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati. The name "Somnath" means "Lord of the Moon," and according to legend, the Moon God (Soma) built the first temple here to seek Lord Shiva's blessings to regain his luster. The temple's history is a story of repeated destruction and reconstruction by various rulers and invaders, including Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024 AD. The current magnificent structure, built in the Chalukya style of architecture, was reconstructed in 1951 after India's independence, spearheaded by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Somnath Temple Architecture: The temple is a masterpiece of Chalukya architecture, known for its intricate carvings, grand pillars, and a towering shikhara (spire). The structure is made of sandstone, and the builders used an interlocking stone technique, which enhances its stability and durability. The temple's position on the seashore is a testament to the engineering skills of ancient builders, as it was strategically chosen to protect it from sea erosion. The temple's shikhara rises to a height of 15 meters and is topped with a 27-foot flagpole.

Other Attractions: Beyond the main temple, Somnath offers several other places of interest for visitors:

  • Triveni Sangam: A sacred spot where devotees take a holy dip.

  • Bhalka Tirth: A temple built at the site where Lord Krishna is believed to have been accidentally shot by a hunter, leading to his final departure from the earthly realm.

  • Geeta Mandir: A temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, with the 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita inscribed on its pillars.

  • Prabhas Patan Museum: Houses relics and artifacts from the original Somnath Temple.

  • Somnath Beach: A popular spot for relaxing and enjoying the scenic views of the Arabian Sea.

Visitor Information: The best time to visit Somnath is during the cooler months from October to February. The temple has a nightly sound and light show that narrates its history. The nearest airport is at Diu, while the Somnath railway station connects it to major cities in Gujarat.
